Staff Training has started!
It may seem all fun and games being an outdoor instructor but that’s not always the case. The new staff members have a grueling schedule over the next couple of weeks in preparation for our busiest time of year, the summer season! Most of the training is based from our site in North Devon and utilises the countryside, rivers and coast on our doorstep. Our training is led by Mark Garland who has many years of training experience and many qualifications to his name. The new instructors will be fully trained on each activity The Ultimate Adventure Centre has to offer, learning not only how to run the sessions but how to support you in the best ways.

Even though the training takes advantage of many of our on-site facilities and activities, it will also lead the instructors to gain recognised qualifications including the CWA (Climbing Wall Award), SPA (Single Pitch Award), MIAS (Mountain Bike Instructor) Level 1, LOLA (Lowland Leader), BC (British Canoeing) Level 1 and 2, First Aid and Beach Life Guard.
The RLSS qualification is a particularly demanding one.
The course provides intensive theoretical and practical training in the theory and practices of Beach Lifeguarding, resuscitation, open water rescue skills and first aid. Beach lifeguarding demands a range of different skills to allow for the varying conditions lifeguards may encounter. Our instructors have to be not only in a fit state but be able to fulfill the following:
- Surface dive to a depth of 1.5 metres
- Tread water for two minutes
- Climb out of deep water unaided and without steps
- Be competent at swimming in the sea
- Be able to swim 400m in less than eight minutes
- Swim 100m on the front, 100m on the back and 200m in less than four minutes.Check out these pics of them practicing their skills in the cold waters of the River Torridge!
Over the next few weeks the NEW instructors will be writing some guest blogs for us to introduce themselves to you!
